Things to do

local rivers or perhaps enjoy a cycle ride through the quiet lanes.
Other leisure activities nearby include golf, horse riding, tennis
and swimming.
This Celtic region has strong cultural
traditions; it is steeped in legend and history. The name ‘Huelgoat’
means the high forest. It was formed from the Breton words ’Huel’
(height) and ‘Koat’ (wood/forest). Huelgoat has always been of
military interest in the past. It’s excellent position during
ancient times was strategically important for the ‘armoricain’
people. The ‘Camp d’Artus’ was held by Caesar’s Legions following
the Roman conquest.
This pretty little town lies on the
shore of a lake of some 15 hectares which flows into the ‘Riviere
d’Argent’ (silver river) tumbling through the ‘Chaos du Moulin’
(huge granite rocks). These rocks have been strangely rounded by
centuries of ice-age erosion. A canal some 3km long is also
supplied by the lake which leads to the ancient silver bearing lead
mines.
There are numerous well sign-posted
walks through the legendary forest around Huelgoat. If you prefer
you can explore the forest on horseback. Discover the Grotto
d’Artus which is said to contain buried treasure. The Mill, Devil’s
Grotto, the Trembling rock and the Boar’s Pool are to mention but a
few places to see.
Well worth a visit is the Botanical
garden and Arboretum which contains some 3600 species of trees and
shrubs from 5 continents.
