Places to Visit in France
Here are just a few ideas of places to
visit in France. More coming soon...
Normandy.
A favourite, with great cider and fabulous cheeses! Lots of lovely
market towns and some of the most important horse studs in France.
Central to Normandy is the 'bocage' landscape, reminiscent of an
older and more tranquil era in Britain. Rolling fields surrounded by
hedge-banks and interspersed with orchards make for a pretty and
gentle landscape. Lovely for families, with an easy landscape for
walking and cycling to suit everyone. A little further afield is the
Suisse Normade with a more rugged and dramatic landscape, perfect
for more energetic mountain biking and walking. Another
favourite area is the Cherbourg peninsula, around St. Lo & Coutances
- this area gives great access to lovely beaches, an easy drive to
the Mont St Michel, and not far from the ferry ports. An essential
trip is to the D-Day beaches and Bayeux on the North coast.
Brittany.
This is a wonderful maritime region where you are
never far from the coast and sandy beaches! Inland there are ancient
forests, lakes, rivers and fabulous 'parcs naturel regional'. This
region is rich with history and a great place for seafood! When in
Brittany make sure you visit the stunning forest, lake and amazing
rock-strewn water at Huelgoat, and make time for Pont Aven, home of
the Synthesist group of painters grouped around Paul Gauguin in the
1880-90s. Carnac is a favourite for its amazing standing stones -
all 1170 of them! No trip to Brittany is complete without visiting
the Mont St Michel, it is magical and the guided tours are
fascinating. Other highlights include La Baule, the Golfe du
Morbihan, Menez-Hom and Crozon, Quimper, and much more.
The Lot.
Lovely rural
area with a refreshing lack of industry. Undulating landscape, it is
one of the largest fruit-growing areas of France, and many fruits,
including strawberries, peaches, apricots, and very special prunes –
in fact, the prunes d’Agen even have an Appellation Contrôlée! This
area is also known for Armagnac.
Poitou-Charentes.
Home to Futuroscope, Cognac, oysters, it's a fairly easy drive
from the north coast and ferry ports. Spring comes early in this
area, it has a lovely mild climate, with longer and hotter summers
than further north.
The Languedoc. (Languedoc-Roussilon). Curving around the Western
coast of the Meditteranean all the way to Spain, this area is
steeped in history. Many areas closest to the Spanish border have a
Catalan feel to them. Peaceful and tranquil, a great place to enjoy
a relaxing holiday, also a surprisingly good wine region. The
scenery is magnificent, from the Pyrenees to the Tarn valley. Visit
medieval castles and towns perched on rocky outcrops one day, then
spend the next sunning yourself on the beach!
